Expert Guidance from a Hair & Skin Clinic in Kolkata

Understanding our skin is only one part of taking care of ourselves.
As we continued that conversation, we looked at how the skin changes with time, how everyday habits can influence those changes, and why the right treatment should always begin with understanding what the skin actually needs.
But there is another concern that often becomes part of the same conversation.
Our hair.
Because just like our skin, our hair also changes.
Sometimes the change is gradual.
It often starts quietly.
Some see more strands than usual while shampooing.
Others suddenly notice that their centre parting is becoming wider or their hairline is starting to recede.
Hair fall is common in both men and women.
But when it becomes persistent or visibly changes your hair density, it is worth understanding the reason behind it.
Because hair fall is not always caused by the same problem.
And the hair fall treatment in Kolkata that works for one person may not be right for another.
Questions My Patients Frequently Ask Me
“Doctor, is losing hair every day normal?”
Some amount of daily hair shedding is normal.
Hair naturally goes through different growth phases, and old hairs eventually fall out to make way for new ones.
The concern is when you notice a clear change from your usual pattern.
More hair on your pillow.
More strands while washing or brushing.
A thinner ponytail.
Or more scalp becoming visible.
If this continues, it is better to understand the cause rather than simply waiting for it to stop.
“Why am I suddenly losing so much hair?”
There can be many reasons.
Genetics is one of the common causes of hair thinning in both men and women.
Hormonal changes can also affect the hair cycle.
For women, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and conditions such as PCOS may be associated with increased hair shedding.
Nutritional deficiencies, particularly inadequate iron or other essential nutrients, may also play a role.
Then there is stress.
I often meet patients who tell me:
“Doctor, my hair fall started a few months after I was very stressed or unwell.”
This can happen.
Significant physical or emotional stress, illness or other changes in the body can affect the hair growth cycle. Increased shedding may sometimes become noticeable after the triggering event rather than immediately.
That is why I always ask about what was happening in a patient’s life before the hair fall started.
“How do I know if my hair fall is becoming a problem?”
Hair loss can begin very gradually.
You may not notice it on the first day.
But over time, certain changes become visible.
A widening centre parting.
A receding hairline.
A thinner ponytail.
More scalp showing through the hair.
Thinning around the crown.
Or small areas where the hair has become noticeably sparse.
These changes do not always mean that you have the same type of hair loss as someone else.
But they are signs that your scalp deserves a closer look.
“Doctor, can you actually find out why my hair is falling?”
Yes.
And this is one of the most important parts of hair-loss treatment.
I usually begin with a detailed consultation.
I ask about your medical history, family history, diet, lifestyle, stress, recent illness, medications and the pattern and duration of your hair loss.
Then I examine your scalp and hair.
Sometimes, the reason is fairly clear.
Sometimes, we need a closer examination.
This is where trichoscopy can be useful.
“What exactly is trichoscopy?”
Trichoscopy is a close examination of the scalp and hair using specialised magnification.
It allows us to look at the hair shafts, follicles and scalp more closely than we can with the naked eye.
It can help us understand the pattern of hair thinning and identify changes that may not be obvious during a routine examination.
I often tell my patients:
“Before we decide what treatment you need, let us first understand what your scalp is showing us.”
Because treatment should follow diagnosis.
Not the other way around.
“Do I need blood tests for hair fall?”
Not everyone needs the same tests.
Depending on your symptoms, medical history and examination, certain blood tests may be recommended.
These may help identify nutritional or hormonal factors that could be contributing to your hair fall.
The important thing is not to start taking supplements simply because someone else told you they helped.
If there is an underlying deficiency or medical concern, it is better to identify it properly.
“Doctor, is there one treatment that works for everyone?”
No.
This is one of the most important things I explain to my patients.
Hair fall can have different causes.
So treatment needs to be personalised.
Depending on the individual case, treatment options may include topical or oral medication, nutritional correction, mesotherapy, light-based therapies such as LLLT/PBM, or other procedures.
In some cases of advanced hair loss, hair transplantation may also be considered.
The right approach depends on the cause, pattern, severity and overall condition of your hair and scalp.
“Can LLLT or PBM help my hair?”
Low-Level Light Therapy, also known as LLLT or Photobiomodulation, may be used as part of a hair-care and scalp treatment plan for suitable patients.
It uses specific wavelengths of light as part of a non-invasive treatment approach.
But I do not recommend choosing a treatment simply because it is trending.
The question is not:
“Is this treatment popular?”
The question is:
“Is this treatment appropriate for your scalp and hair?”
That is why assessment comes first.
“Doctor, I want to improve my hair before Pujo. Is there something I can do?”
This is a question I often hear as the festive season approaches.
Many people want their scalp and hair to look and feel better before Pujo.
At Si Lumi, we have introduced the Pujo Hair Revive – ₹5,999 package.
The package includes 3 sessions with:
- Scalp analysis/trichoscopy
- Scalp cleansing and preparation
- LLLT / PBM session
- Scalp serum application
- Microcurrent scalp stimulation
- Hair-care prescription and home-care plan
The aim is to begin with an understanding of your scalp and then provide a structured approach to hair and scalp care.
Because even when you want a festive-season hair refresh, the process should still begin with understanding what your scalp actually needs.
“Doctor, how long will it take to see results?”
This is one of the most common questions I receive.
My honest answer is:
Hair needs time.
Hair grows in cycles.
The time required to notice improvement can vary depending on the cause of hair fall, its severity, the treatment being used and how consistently you follow the recommended plan.
Some people may first notice a change in shedding.
Visible improvement in hair density can take longer.
So please do not judge your treatment after one or two sessions.
Give your hair time.
Follow the plan consistently.
And attend your recommended follow-ups.
What I Tell Every Patient
- Please do not panic when you notice a few strands of hair falling.
- But do not ignore persistent hair fall either.
- Do not keep changing shampoos and serums every few weeks.
- Do not start supplements without understanding whether you actually need them.
- And do not compare your hair with someone else’s.
Your hair loss may have a completely different cause.
The sooner we understand that cause, the clearer the treatment approach can become.
